Having spent big in the summer, the January transfer window so far has been comparatively quiet for Nottingham Forest, who are yet to conduct any business.
Despite the distracting managerial situation, the club must still be proactive and seek to improve their squad this month, especially if they’re serious about challenging for the play-offs.
What’s the word?
The Reds are well-stocked in midfield in terms of numbers, but less so with regard to tactical diversity. The likes of Claudio Yacob, Jack Colback, Liam Bridcutt and Adlene Guedioura all perform similar roles, with none of them offering a huge amount of creativity or attacking threat.
In order to become a more dynamic, offensive side, Forest must find a midfielder who poses a threat to the opposition from deep. None of their current squad can fulfil this role, so the club must turn to the transfer window.

As a realistic and affordable target, Forest ought to look to make a move for Leicester City outcast Matty James.
Getting back on track
The 27-year-old joined the Foxes, then a Championship outfit, in 2012 and has since made over 100 appearances for the club.
However, the former England under-20 international has been frozen out by Claude Puel this season, having featured in the Premier League just once.
In order to get his career back on track, James must seek pastures new. A return to Championship level ought to see him get the game time he needs, he would also provide the creativity and forward thrust that Forest’s midfield are currently missing.
