Olivier Giroud’s contract with Chelsea will expire at the end of the season, and Everton should be keeping a close eye on developments.
What’s the word, then?
Giroud joined Chelsea on an 18-month contract from Arsenal in January 2018.
The forward managed five goals for the Blues in the second half of last season, but has found it difficult to make his mark at the club this term.
To be honest, neither Giroud nor Alvaro Morata have been terrific for Maurizio Sarri’s side this season, and a lack of an in-form centre-forward might well cost them the chance to challenge for the Premier League title.
There is an argument that Chelsea do not play to Giroud’s strengths though, and the 32-year-old must be doing something right when considering that he is a favourite of France boss Didier Deschamps.
Even if Chelsea decide to extend Giroud’s contract, there is every chance he could be available at the end of the season, and Everton should make a move.
What would Giroud bring to Everton?
Giroud’s game has never been about goals, but it is worth remembering that he scored over 100 times for Arsenal in just over 250 appearances.
The striker also played a key role in France’s 2018 World Cup triumph, and has made 87 appearances for his national team since debuting in 2011, scoring 33 times.
Everton will be in the market for a new forward at the end of the season when considering that Cenk Tosun has struggled to kick on this term.
Richarlison has been outstanding for the Toffees, but the Brazil international would be even better if he had selfless Giroud alongside him.
Giroud is a lot better than people give him credit for, and Richarlison would enjoy playing alongside the Frenchman at Goodison Park next season.
