West Ham United confirmed the appointment of Manuel Pellegrini as their new manager on Tuesday, with the former Manchester City boss already declaring that he is keen to bring four or five new players to the London Stadium this summer, with owner David Sullivan having the chance to go from zero to hero with fans by delivering these three new signings.
The 64-year-old replaced David Moyes after the east London club decided not to extend his short-term contract which expired at the end of the season, and he certainly comes with great pedigree having won the 2014 Premier League title with Manchester City and having never finished outside of the top seven during his time managing in European football.
As well as City, that includes spells with Spanish clubs Villarreal and Malaga, and he certainly has some great connections at both of those clubs as well as the current Premier League champions that he could call upon for new additions to his Hammers squad over the course of the next few weeks.
Reliable club insider @ExWHUemployee has already ruled out a move for 35-year-old Yaya Toure after The Telegraph had previously claimed that he could be targeted, but it certainly doesn’t mean that the Chilean won’t look to reunite with other familiar faces he has worked with previously.
Here are three players West Ham could sign with Pellegrini connections…
Having shipped 68 goals in their 38 Premier League matches this season – the joint-worst record alongside relegated Stoke City – it is clear to see that West Ham and Pellegrini need to prioritise defensive reinforcements this summer.
With Jose Fonte leaving for China in February, James Collins on his way out after his contract expired and Winston Reid continuing to be plagued by injury issues, it is clear that the east London outfit need at least one new centre-back to compete with the likes of Reid, Declan Rice and Angelo Ogbonna.
Pellegrini signed Mangala when he was in charge of City in 2014, and with the Frenchman now seemingly surplus to requirements under Pep Guardiola he could look to be reunited with him again this summer.
It has been clear for a while now that West Ham need a new, dominant defensive midfielder – both Slaven Bilic and David Moyes wanted one during the previous two transfer windows – and they must make sure they get one this summer.
While they have been linked with the likes of William Carvalho and Leander Dendoncker in the past, Pellegrini may well put forward the name of Camacho for consideration.
The 28-year-old established himself as one of the best in his position in Spain during more than 200 appearances for Malaga – many of which came under the 64-year-old – before he joined Wolfsburg last summer, and despite some injury issues he has proven that he is hugely effective from a defensive point of view in terms of winning tackles and aerial duels, and making interceptions.
Pellegrini was Manchester City manager when the then teenager arrived at the Etihad from Championship club Fulham, and the Chilean handed him both his first-team debut and his Premier League bow as he made three appearances in all competitions.
The winger has been on loan at Celtic for the last two-and-a-half seasons, but with @ExWHUemployee confirming that the 64-year-old manager is looking to sign young players with pace, it would probably be a surprise if he didn’t attempt a reunion with the 21-year-old forward in order to add to his attacking options this summer.
